Dr Paul Adcock

Director of Research and Technology

Dr Adcock heads up the teams at Intelligent Energy developing PEM fuel cell stacks and systems, as well as directing and defining the key technological pathways for product development.

He has over 20 years experience in fuel cell technology and previously was director of the Fuel Cell Group at Loughborough University. Prior to his appointment at the University, he was Chief Electrical Engineer at Regulateurs Europa Ltd, a subsidiary of the General Electric Company.

Dr Adcock has published over 65 technical papers relating to fuel cell technology and has a BSc in Electronics and PhD in Electromechanical Engineering.

Murali Arikara

Executive Vice President Emerging Markets

Prior to Intelligent Energy, Lee co-founded Jadoo Power Systems Inc. and served as its CTO and Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. At Jadoo, he was responsible for corporate strategy, technology acquisitions and licensing, government relations, market development and intellectual property management.

Lee has over 15 years experience that includes business development, marketing and power systems engineering. He has been an integral team member of technology start-ups related to fuel cell technology and portable power systems. He brings a unique understanding of markets, customers, products and technology.

Lee was selected as the Entrepreneur of the Year for Northern California in 2006 by Ernst & Young. He is an inventor of four awarded patents and several pending patents related to fuel cell technology.

Lee holds a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University and a BE degree in Electrical Power Systems from Osmania University (India).

James Batchelor

Managing Director, Motive Division

James Batchelor was appointed Managing Director, Motive Division in October 2011. James brings a wealth of experience, including engineering leadership, business development, sales, technology licensing and partnership-forming responsibilities with large OEMs and their tier-one suppliers.
James joins from Torotrak plc, a clean-technology development and IP licensing business, where he was responsible for the commercialisation of its innovative transmission systems across a number of global markets and applications. He has previously held senior engineering, commercial and business development positions at Land Rover, BMW AG and Trafficmaster plc, where he was responsible for its European subsidiary.

As Managing Director, Motive Division at Intelligent Energy James is responsible for expanding the company’s motive business globally, building upon successful relationships such as its ongoing partnership with the Suzuki Motor Corporation.

Phil Caldwell

Business Development Director

Phil Caldwell is responsible for leading the business development activities across the Intelligent Energy group. Phil joined Intelligent Energy in 2003 and was initially responsible for leading business development in Asia, with a particular focus on securing Japanese OEM partners in the automotive and stationary power markets.

Phil then moved into his current role, taking on responsibility for the overall activities and strategic direction of the business development team across the Intelligent Energy group.

Phil has a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College and achieved chartered engineering status while working for ICI’s Electrochemical Technology Business.

During his time at ICI Phil worked in various roles transitioning through process engineering into the commercial side of the business via technical service, account management and business development. During this time Phil was responsible for key accounts and business development activities across Asia including Indonesia, Taiwan, China and India.

In 2001 Phil was awarded a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Engineering to study an MBA at IESE in Barcelona, a leading international business school, as a Sainsbury’s Management Fellow.

John Clark

Engineering Director

John Clark joined Intelligent Energy from Rolls-Royce, the power systems company for land, sea and air.

Most recently, he was Rolls-Royce’s Programme Director and Chief Engineer for the Royal Navy’s in-service gas turbines; accountable for the successful technical and commercial delivery of this key customer account to the Group.

Prior to that, John led the engineering development and certification of the MT30 gas turbine, which was recently selected to power the US Navy’s two newest combat ship designs against stiff competition from other power systems providers. This entailed the coordination and integration of a time bound range of complex technical, commercial and capital projects across many different sites and countries across the globe.

Before joining Rolls-Royce’s Marine division, John led Rolls-Royce’s programme to assess and develop emerging power system technologies across all its divisions, in particular fuel cells, where he led a series of design studies, competitive and market evaluations, and focused the direction of Rolls-Royce’s fuel cells strategy.

Dr Chris Dudfield

Director of Operations

Dr Dudfield heads up Intelligent Energy’s Programme Management Office and is responsible for implementing standardised programme management tools and processes and resourcing programmes, ensuring the smooth management of load and resource capacity.

Dr Dudfield also looks after related training programmes and efficient PIAP (Programme Initiation and Approval Procedure) implementation across the company.

Before joining Intelligent Energy, Dr Dudfield was a Research Fellow in the Aero and Automotive Engineering Department of Loughborough University, working on applied electrochemical research relating to Innogy’s ‘Regensys’ Redox fuel cell technology.

He has worked continuously in the field of fuel cell research since 1990 and has extensive practical experience in fuel cell stack, fuel processing and fuel cell systems technology.

Dr Dudfield has a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Chemistry, both from Loughborough University.

Steve Hunton

Managing Director Stationary Power Division

Steve Hunton is responsible for Intelligent Energy’s Stationary Power Division.

Steve Hunton was most recently Group Sales Director at Intelligent Energy, having joined from Lotus Engineering, where he worked for more than 20 years, initially as part of the procurement team before progressing to a client facing role working with customers around the world. From 2004, he was responsible for Lotus Engineering sales and marketing activities, leading a diverse group of sales teams based around the world.

Dr Mark Lawson-Statham

Director of Corporate Finance

Dr Lawson-Statham is a former Director of Close Brothers Corporate Finance Limited and Managing Director of Close Brothers International. He is also a former Director of Robert Fleming International Limited and JP Morgan Asset Management (UK) Limited.

He has credentials in investment research in the energy and utility sectors and was a fund manager of energy portfolios.

Dr Lawson-Statham has a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Neutron Scattering from Oxford University.

John Maguire

Chief Financial Officer

John Maguire joined the Board in January 2012 and has a wealth of Board level experience of listed and unlisted technology rich companies, having conducted strategic planning and successful financial management for growing businesses across the globe.

He joined Intelligent Energy from Etisalat Nigeria, one of four national mobile operators in the country, where his responsibilities included the negotiation and delivery of a national 3G licence. He was previously CFO at THUS Group plc, and worked in a number of senior positions, including as Vice President Japan and Asia, at Cable and Wireless before its acquisition of THUS.

Allan McNichol

Managing Director, Consumer Electronics Division

Allan McNichol was appointed Managing Director, Consumer Electronics Division in October 2011. Allan has a wealth of international experience at both small and medium fast growth businesses. He also has an excellent track record in large global businesses, most recently at Thomson Reuters where he was responsible for the re-engineering and launch of Eikon, the global web-based information platform for financial professionals.
Following an early career selling financial products, Allan joined Equis, a financial technology provider based in Salt Lake City, where he quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed CEO in 1999, not long after the company was acquired by Reuters. In 2005, McNichol was appointed Global Head of Desktop Platform at Reuters Plc responsible for driving a global change management and integration programme underpinning a multi-billion dollar financial information business.

As Managing Director, Consumer Electronics at Intelligent Energy Allan is responsible for growing the company’s consumer electronics and portable power business globally, shaping strategy and forging key partnerships in the sector to accelerate market introduction.

Dr Philip Mitchell

Chief Technology Officer

Dr Mitchell is an electrochemist with over 20 years of experience in fuel cell and related fields. He was formerly Research and Development Manager at Innogy Technology Ventures Ltd (part of the Innogy Group) where he was engaged in the development of the “Regenesys” electrochemical energy storage system and directed Innogy’s research programme in regenerative fuel cell and electrochemical technologies.

Dr Mitchell has a BSc and a PhD in Chemistry, both from Loughborough University.

Joe O’Sullivan

Chief Operating Officer

Joe O’Sullivan joined Intelligent Energy as Chief Operating Officer in October 2011 having most recently served as VP Operations, Sales and Marketing of Microvision, a leading provider of display and imaging products for mobile applications. Prior to this, he spent 15 years at Apple Computer Inc., serving in various leadership functions, which included, while Vice President of Operations, directing the product management and introduction of the iMac computer. Joe brings over three decades of management experience in the high technology industry, primarily in the fields of reengineering, architecting and implementing global supply chain, sales and marketing activities. At Apple, he oversaw development of some of the first innovative supplier hubs in the high technology industry and established and optimised global supply chain operations, efficiency initiatives and procurement strategies.

Tracey Redfern

Group Financial Controller

Tracey reports directly to the CFO with sole responsibility for all financials across the groups four global sites. Tracey joined Intelligent Energy in November 2007, a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) with extensive strategic and commercial finance experience gained across a variety of business sectors.

Prior to Intelligent Energy Tracey worked with Experian plc, the leading global information services company, where she held various senior finance positions, ultimately responsible for reporting the group UK and Ireland financials in a period of growth.

Andrew Spooner

Head of Operations

Andrew Spooner is accountable for leading the operations team at Intelligent Energy in the delivery of world-class levels of delivery, cost and quality management, creating operations, procurement and production strategies to meet the company’s current and future strategic direction.

Andrew joined Intelligent Energy from Rolls Royce plc, where he managed a procurement team responsible for the nuclear steam-raising plant providing propulsion for the UK strategic deterrent, responsible for restructuring the supply chain to meet changing business needs.

Previously, whilst completing his MBA, Andrew worked for a power systems business based in Norway as the Manager for External Enterprise, leading a multinational team.

Before that, he worked in Internal Audit at Rolls Royce plc, becoming the Finance Manager for one of the gas turbine operating units.

Andrew began his career at Whitbread plc where he qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA). Whilst at Whitbread, he gained experience in Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, Project Management and Auditing as well as managing and developing people.

Andrew has an MBA from the Open University and an ACMA from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Dr Henri Winand

Chief Executive Officer

Dr Henri Winand joined the Board as Chief Executive on 1 September 2006. He was most recently Vice President of Corporate Venturing at Rolls-Royce plc, the power systems provider for land, sea and air.

During his time with Rolls-Royce, Dr Winand managed a power systems business, introduced new manufacturing technologies into the group and was responsible for defining and supervising the implementation of strategies for deriving additional value from the group’s technology assets (involving serving on the boards of directors of some of the joint ventures in which Rolls-Royce invested).

Dr Winand has a PhD from the University of Cambridge, a Masters of Business Administration from Warwick University and a BEng from Imperial College, London.
