Intelligent Energy deploys first in-house developed microgrid solution in partnership with University of Nottingham
- Deployment of first in-house containerised fuel cell system for stationary power
- IE-GRID™ product delivers scalable, zero-emission power for data centres, grid balancing, back-up power and off-grid applications
Loughborough, UK – 22 December 2025 – Intelligent Energy is proud to announce the deployment of its first in-house IE-GRID™ product, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham (UoN). This milestone marks a significant step forward in delivering scalable, zero-emission power solutions for stationary and microgrid applications.
The IE-GRID system leverages Intelligent Energy’s proven IE-DRIVE™ HD fuel cell technology, configured into a containerised power system. Designed for industries seeking clean, resilient energy, IE-GRID offers rapid response times, high power density, grid independence and zero emissions – making it ideal for data centres, grid balancing, and off-grid deployments.
This work forms part of the Research England-funded Feed-MT project for the PEMC Building at the University of Nottingham, where the first unit has been delivered. The system has been installed at the Jubilee Campus and will be used for testing and demonstration within a microgrid environment. The collaboration reflects both partners’ strong commitment to advancing hydrogen technology and driving the transition to clean energy.
Intelligent Energy’s IE-DRIVE fuel cells are also powering both entertainment and defence sectors, with a 600kW stationary power solution supplied to the U.S. Department of Defense earlier this year and a hybrid generator developed in collaboration with a UK Film & TV company.
Greg Harris, CCO of Intelligent Energy, commented:
“There is a current and increasing demand for containerised power solutions using hydrogen fuel cells. Our IE-GRID products can be utilised in a wide range of applications where the high efficiency, compactness and fast-response, enable a practical alternative to the fossil fuel-based power units that have historically been used.”
