Zero Emission Fuel Cell Scooter
The Suzuki Burgman fuel cell scooter is a lower carbon, zero tail pipe emission vehicle with a practical range and rapid refuelling. It recently became the first fuel cell vehicle to achieve the EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA). Reducing carbon emissions from road vehicles will be crucial in achieving the carbon dioxide reduction target of 80% by 2015. Electric motorbikes, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, have no harmful exhaust emissions and will be an important part of ‘cleaner’ urban commuting.
“ ...The Suzuki Burgman fuel cell scooter has become the world’s first fuel cell vehicle to earn Whole Vehicle Type Approval in the EU. Our aim is to make eco-friendly fuel cell scooters increasingly common in Europe, in line with the establishment of hydrogen filling stations and other necessary infrastructure.” Suzuki Global News
Throughout a 15 month programme, real life performance data and operational experience has been gained from the everyday use of a small fleet of fuel cell powered Suzuki Burgman motor scooters. This was initially carried out through set drive patterns in and around Loughborough University, becoming more expansive as a key milestone in the history of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles was achieved with the grant of EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval for the fuel cell Burgman. This endorsement of the integrated fuel cell design and other novel sub-components, is the first time any fuel cell based vehicle has met the exacting requirements set by the European Union.
Not only was the feedback data from this demonstration programme used to support the approval process throughout, but it also provided valuable information to enhance the design of the fuel cell Burgman. Information relating to hydrogen efficiency, vehicle range, hybridisation control and performance feel, in relation to real life optimised urban drive cycle information was gathered and fed back into the design process for future models. Using this data, it has been shown that a range of over 200 miles is achievable between refills of hydrogen and that each refill can be safely completed in less than 5 minutes.
The granting of WVTA, represents a major step towards full commercialisation of the fuel cell scooter; a vehicle now deemed safe for use on Europe’s roads and approved for sale directly to the consumer in every country of the European Union.
